Boonah Open Studios 19th and 20th Sept 2009 &  29th and 30th May 2010

Between Lake Maroon and Coochin on the Boonah Rathdowney Rd is the stunning studio of Landscape artist Helen Bartley.  ‘The studio with its spectacular outlook in all directions, is my treasured space for inspiration and contemplation”.

For an entirely different experience head to the heart of Boonah and the cradle of Boonah’s bustling arts community.  The old Butter Factory is home to an array of artists and arts projects.  Bronze sculptor Cathy Anderson has lived and worked in Boonah for 18 years and the butter factory is her permanent studio. Cathy’s work was the first public art commissioned for Boonah to celebrate the Year of the Outback.  ‘With and Eye on the Sky’ is a life-size bronze sculpture in High st outside the Boonah Council building and depicts a man pausing in his labours to look skywards for signs of a change in the weather.

Also sharing the Old Butter factory is inspirational mouth artist Rachel Brook.  Rachel has cerebral palsy and uses her mouth to create vibrant colourful portraits in a naïve style.  She is a much loved member of the community and been involved in many of the town festivals and arts projects and is always happy to talk with visitors on her computerised talker. You can also see Kim Morris who creates works on paper, intricate in detail and often with an environmental message her work is super realistic but also highly evocative. Ankie King who is the exhibitions coordinator of the Boonah Regional gallery is a textile artist specialising in indigo dying and wearable art.

If you can tear your self away from this great art space head up the road to historic town of Kalbar and visit artist in residence at the Wiss Emporium Katrina Dobbs.  Katrina comes from a background in digital art and graphic design and is now dedicating herself to pet portraiture. She uses rich off the wall colour and close cropped images for her subjects.  The result: modern but quirky four legged fine art!

Ready for a quiet pace and a cup of tea?  Then Sweet Music Afternoon teas at Zengarra country house and pavilions near Lake Moogerah are the thing for you. At 2.30 on weekends relax in the tranquillity and beautiful surroundings of Zengarra and listen to some gentle music played on the Concert Marimba and the Grand Piano by permanent artist in residence Christine Leah. Enjoy home baked treats with a pot of perfect Fortnum & Mason tea served on a Villeroy & Boch china tea service. From Pachelbel to Bach. From Chopin to Elton John via Einaudi – something for everyone.  (Numbers are limited so please phone (07) 5463 5600 to make a booking. Cost: $25 per person, normally $35.)
