'Thor Phillips wields his guitar like a hammer, electric or acoustic, the confidence with which he plays is attention grabbing. He performs like it's his right to be a musician and it is. From stomp box driven bluegrass to intimate, laid back country, there's sure to be a hit or two coming out of Thor's hammer very soon'. Award winning singer-songwriter John Harley Weston Thor Phillips has all the power and energy of a caged storm; his fingers lightning fast on the fret board, bass drum rumbling, soulful voice reaching to fill the spaces. Thor is carving out a reputation as a unique blues and roots singer/songwriter, and a talented multi-instrumentalist who delivers a dynamic, energetic performance… complete with busted strings. When Thor’s heartfelt, honest lyrics meet his jaw-dropping guitar skills, the audience is sucked in to stories of the good, the bad and the beautiful… you might even forget he is playing the drums at the same time. In his recently released self-titled album, Thor Phillips holds nothing back. As well as singing, playing guitar, dobro, bass and drums on the tracks, each song was written, recorded and produced by Thor, in his cottage studio on Tamborine Mountain in the beautiful Gold Coast Hinterland. The songs tell the tale of possibilities, loss, yearning, identity and freedom. They are anthems of struggle with a chorus of hope. One music lover described Thor Phillips as a power-packed mix of blues, roots and dynamite… “like John Butler, meets Pete Murray, meets something that goes bang!”. This past year has been a whirlwind of gigs, festival appearances and recording that has helped Thor climb to the #1 ranked Queensland Blues artist on music website ReverbNation. In 2013, Thor will bring some roots to the first ever Broadbeach Country Music Festival in June , and will satisfy the crowds at the Bluewater Country Music Festival in Nelson Bay. He’s also set to play a stack of gigs throughout the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Northern Rivers with other festival announcements to come. Thor began playing guitar at the age of four, and by 13 was performing around the Byron Bay area where he was born and raised. Before launching his debut album, Thor played as a guitarist for Aussie rock legend John Swan, and has appeared on stage with Golden Guitar winning country acts Carter and Carter and Travis Sinclair. He has recently returned from the Country Gets the Blues tour of New South Wales, South East Queensland and the Tamworth Country Music Festival; the show a collaboration with country singer and good mate Dane Sharp. He has spent many years performing alongside International music award recipient, Adam James, appearing at the Woodford Folk Festival, the Dreaming Festival and other local and interstate performances. A song the pair co-wrote in 2010, Freedom Now Begins, was a finalist in the Q Song Awards 2010, reached #7 on the Australian Country Music Radio chart and in 2012 reached #1 in Canada on the NAM Charts.
