‘I find purpose and pleasure in being a teacher, an artist, and a ‘maker’.’ Patena is happiest working with contemporary textiles, particularly wax resist (batik) on selected natural fibres. She is motivated by colour and pattern, and good design captured in functional objects. Her work also includes painting and lino prints of the macro and micro landscape where she lives. Bright colour and strong contrasts is a feature of these works.

Alongside her colour-filled creations, Patena makes more conceptual work using collage and box making. These works tell a story — of family, of community, of the relationship between people, creativity and ‘making’; the ‘capturing’ and ‘arranging’ of selected objects and materials.
