The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from entries from across Australia, reflecting the distinctive vision of the nation’s aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.

The annual prize is the National Portrait Gallery’s most popular exhibition, promoting the very best in contemporary photographic portraiture by Australian photographers.

Photography is the dominant portrait medium of our time. The National Photographic Portrait Prize reflects the distinctive vision of Australia’s aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.

Also featured is a video of interviews with the judges, explaining the judging process and selection of finalists, and a video of all the finalists over the past nine years that the prize has been running.

The exhibition tour is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.
