A Special Invitation
To ALL Australian South Sea Islander Descendants of families Blackbirded to QLD in 1847 – 1904.

SOUTH SEA ISLANDER ACKNOWLDEGEMENT STATEMENT
We would like to honour our South Sea Islander forefathers who through their hardship and struggle paved the way for our generation and future generations and who made a substantial contribution to the economy and community of QLD. We also acknowledge our Australian South Sea Islander Elders past, present.

Commemoration Walk Timeline
9 am
- Assemble for Walk on Walker Road, (on the old cotton plantation)
Australian South Sea Islander descendants, Walker family, Chiefs of Vanuatu, Current landowners and
descendants of the old Townsvale Cotton Plantation, (Vanuatu/Solomon Is/New Caledonia/Fiji/PNG/Torres
Strait/Aboriginal) families connected to the Blackbirding era 1847-1904
10am Walk to Begin
10.30am - Official Welcome to Country from the Mununjali Elders to the Australian South Sea Islander
people performing custom dance, give permission to come on to traditional land, smoking ceremony exchange
of gifts between Mununjali and South Sea Islander families.
10.45am Community join the walk for entrance on to the land.
11am Commencement of Formalities and Family Event.
We will walk as individuals, as a community, as family, unshackled, in freedom, in grace, in forgiveness, in celebration to represent and pay respect to our ancestors of the pacific islands.

  •  Parking will be at the rear of the Church
  • There will be 2 buses to transport families from the church to the Assembly point on Walker Road,
  • For elders who may not be able to work the distance, an Elders Assembly point will be provided prior to Official Welcome to Country by Mununjali Elders.
  • Following the Welcome to Country, ALL community are welcome to join and walk onto the land together.
  • A register will also be provided at the assembly point for families to record their names to be included on the historical document.
